Urban Forest Management and Monitoring: Principles, Practices, and Applications in Brasov

Romanian workshop

A workshop developed by our Romanian partners

On the 29th and 31st of May 2023, our Romanian partners the University of Brasov and Forest Design led a workshop at the University of Brasov. The workshop focused on managing and monitoring techniques in urban forestry, including also some case studies of different applications across Brasov.

Over the 2 days, participants from both the private and public sectors had the opportunity to learn more about urban forests and the challenges they face. Among them, particular emphasis was given to the policies and regulations related to urban forests. However, the main sessions of the workshop focused on the management and monitoring of urban forests. Participants discussed different types of cuts, their benefits and drawbacks. At the same time, there was also time to discuss more bureaucratic issues, such as planning and decision-making. During the session on monitoring, participants discovered different technological tools which are becoming essential in urban forestry. Among them, GIS, remote sensing, LiDAR are sparking a true revolution in this sector.

Finally, on the second day participants had the opportunity to visit a case study and learn directly from the field! The field session took place at the Sub Tampa urban forest, a forest surrounded by the city of Brasov. During this session, participants saw in reality some best practices of urban forest management and monitoring and their implications. At the same time, participants had the opportunity to practice using GIS and remote sensing.
